Discrimination comes in so many forms and has no boundaries or borders. Sadly people experience discrimination based on gender, nationality, age, ethnic origin, sexual orientation and religion.
Here are just a few examples:
- Only 40% of our entire globe’s countries have equal numbers of girls and boys attending secondary school
- 75 countries have laws that criminalize same-sex relations
- Canadian women are paid, on average, 18% less than Canadian men
- Young women report being told they need to be sterilized after an HIV positive diagnosis
- Young men report that they are sometimes still fearful for their lives if they disclose their HIV status
“When the most marginalized and vulnerable face discrimination and abuse, all of us are diminished,” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “The United Nations is strongly committed to upholding human rights and dignity for all.”
